About Not Alone

Our Mission

To support the families of those who are missing, believed murdered and our vision is to bring together those who are caught between the “Missing” world and the “Homicide” world

Not Alone was conceived due to the disappearance and suspected homicide of Sarah MacDiarmid (which is still unresolved), on Wednesday 11th July 1990, from Kananook railway station near Frankston, Victoria.

Sarah enjoyed her sport and particularly tennis so it was usual for her to enjoy a game on Wednesday nights each week with friends from work. Wednesday 11th July 1990 was no exception and after enjoying her tennis with three other friends from work, they stopped for a drink prior to going home.

Sarah with two of her friends from the game caught the train at approximately 9.10 pm from Flinders Street station in Melbourne City and headed for home. The train suffered a delay on the way south of about 10 to 15 minutes. Her two friends got off the train four stops before Kananook station. From re-enactments conducted in the ensuing week at Kananook, it is known that Sarah got off at Kananook on that Wednesday night and headed for the car park to pick up her red Honda.

The next day, Thursday 12th July, the police found blood beside and on Sarah’s car. Sarah’s family, her mum Sheila, her dad Peter and her brother and best friend Alisdair have never seen Sarah again.

The parents of Sarah found that the process of obtaining many services tended to be go -it alone searches and was of a fragmented nature. There was and still is a great need for help from Government agencies, i.e. , Community Health (Social services) and access to other life-counseling services when major decisions are involved.

It has been almost 20 years since Sarah disappeared and it is only with the benefit of hindsight that the parents and brother of Sarah realise the kind of help which would have benefited them and how they would have avoided some of the problems encountered if that help had been available.

It is their fervent hope that Not Alone will help to alleviate some of the on -going difficulties and suffering of other victims families and friends
